Six questions with Amanda Cox -Salty Bee Spice Co.

What inspired you to launch your business?

I've always been passionate about food and cooking and sharing food and cooking. Pre-COVID, I found myself preparing lunches for coworkers weekly, with the items based on different countries or regions of the world. What I enjoyed most, other than their reactions, was sharing well-seasoned, globally-inspired food.  I decided the best way I could continue to share my food was through my spice blends.

What is your passion?

I'm most passionate about learning and sharing knowledge. As a teacher, it truly brings me joy to share something new with others, whether it's a fact, a song, or a meal. So much can be accomplished by just sharing something with someone else.

How do you start your day?

I start my day by organizing my thoughts and goals in an attempt to set myself up for success, and then I get breakfast ready for my husband and our youngest so they can have a good start as well. I also have a conversation with my mom every morning.

Favorite local business?

I try to balance my hometown coffee drinking between Elm City Roastery & Juice Bar and the Soap Co. Coffee House, both in Jacksonville. When I'm leaving Springfield and am picking up lunch for the family, Biscuits + Brunch By Three Twigs is a consistent favorite, along with Roots Latin Grill. Can I keep going? I certainly could!

What do you deem as success in business?

I selected a bee for our logo, among other reasons, because bees have a sense of community, which I get out of sharing with others.

I will feel successful people are buzzing about our products. Also, I love having the opportunity to work alongside other companies in the business community.

What is your number one piece of advice for business owners?

As a new owner, just starting, it has meant the world to me that other business owners have been so willing to "reach down" and be welcoming to me. I hope that as they grow and thrive, they'll continue doing that. As my nana would say, "Never get too big for your britches!" I've worked with many fantastic business community members so far. I'm so grateful for it.
