What inspired you to launch your business?

I worked in several fields, including the food industry, public health, and media/communications. I had worked in many different work environments, gathering skills and with growing responsibilities. I'd been tossing around the idea of starting my own business about one-and-a-half years before the bookstore came up for sale. I had been a long-time fan and customer of the indie bookstore in town, always a reader, and when the owner put the store up for sale in 2018, it seemed like a perfect fit for me.

What is your passion?

In general, I am passionate about art, music, books. Oh, and eating good food, traveling, and nature. I love how my work as a bookseller and bookstore owner allows me to bring people together and offer a venue to meet and explore new ideas. In my mind, we as humans can only benefit and grow from exposure to new ideas, worlds, and ways of thinking.

How do you start your day?

I start my day by waking my son, making him breakfast, and making myself a pour-over coffee with locally roasted beans; I'm currently adding cardamom pods to my coffee grounds, which is a thing people do in the middle east. It adds a delicious bit of sweet spice to my coffee and my morning.

Favorite local business?

Currently, Elm City Roastery in Jacksonville, IL, is my favorite local business because of the delicious baked goods, lunch, and coffee.

What do you deem as success in business?

Beyond financial sustainability and growth, I deem success in business as meeting your goals, whatever they may be. My goal is to connect with my community and my customers and offer an experience and a product that allows them to contribute to their own life, health, or quality of life. Also, as my business grows, I've enjoyed growing a community of regular staff who feel supported and respected for their contributions.

What is your number one piece of advice for business owners?

My advice for business owners is to be true to yourself and check in regularly with yourself; be open to new ideas and participate in idea sharing with other small businesses and business owners. Don't be afraid to push forward with your creative vision when you need to.
