Six questions with Erica Luce

Flourish Flower Company

Sherman, Illinois

What inspired you to launch your own business?

I actually took over the flower shop that I had worked at on and off for 20 years. I was a stay at home/homeschool mom after my three kids were born. I could see that I was working my way out of a job as they grew. The opportunity came up for our family to take over the business and we went for it.

What are you most passionate about?

Jesus is my first love, but my family is something I am super passionate about. I have loved being a mom and a wife. It is now such a thrill to be a business owner. In my business I am super passionate about giving our customers the best possible customer service and the best possible product. I seriously desire our little flower shop to be a place where you know you are loved through every season of life. We are there for the celebrations and we send their loving sentiments in the hard times. This is a big deal to me.

How do you start your day?

As a florist with a very small staff, I usually am out of the house early to get the day going or to deliver an early morning funeral. I generally start my day with a cup of joe and a podcast.

Favorite local business to shop at:

I adore everything that Three Twigs is doing.

What do you deem as success in business?

Success for me is imperfect progress. I have never done this before. I have several course corrections that I would like to see happen to make this shop more like me and my vision.  It takes time and patience. Success to me is also connecting with each customer. It's my jam.

What is your number one piece of advice for business owners?

I am so new to being a business owner. I don't know if I have any wisdom yet. A dear friend shared with me to hire someone for their heart and everything else can be learned. I believe that is true for me as I look to expand and hire.
